Bussunda 1962 - 2006
The Brazilian comedian Bussunda died yesterday of a heart attack. He had been in Germany to "cover" the World Cup with the rest of his comedy show, Casseta & Planeta. He and his friends were playing soccer when he felt dizzy. He was by far the funniest actor on the show.
I don't know that much about him, other than what I read on wikipedia. He was a fanatical soccer fan, and a very funny man. It's all in Portuguese, but here's what YouTube has:

In particular, even if you don't speak a word of Portuguese, look at this one (and pay attention if you get the chance to hear the real Ronaldo speak!):

I was very lonely in the States yesterday in expressing that same opinion. The first US red card was borderline - it was a vicious tackle, but if not for the previous red card, it would probably have been a yellow. But if you've watched more than about five international matches, you know that once that first red card comes out, you have to be very careful because another one is going to come if there is a good excuse, and Mastroeni gave the ref that excuse by coming in cleats-up, both feet, and getting no ball at all.
The Eddie Pope sendoff was 60% Arena's fault and 40% Pope's fault. Pope is good but there's no reason to have him in for the second half carrying a yellow. We have other backs. And that challenge was a joke, as evident in the fact that he got the ball and it was still a pretty obvious yellow.
As for the effort and the match itself, it was easily the most excited I've ever been watching a soccer game. The (very properly) disallowed Beasley goal had us turning cartwheels, completely unhinged. There was a meathead friend of mine who hates soccer and he was jumping up and down with the rest of us.

You know, Eddie Pope was a star until he left DC United. Maybe I'm being a homer, but I think that really was more or less (by coincidence -- I'm not implying cause and effect) when he stopped being a great center-back of the future and started being a regular in a so-so national team. He should have left DC United when the offers were coming in from Europe (say, 98-99) and no later. The MLS is a league for stars of the future and stars of the past, and (at present, at least) no more.
And if you want to comment on the US-Italy game, please use the post that discusses the US-Italy game, and not the post that doesn't.
I mean, Jeebus, Bussunda deserves/deserved better.
Hmm. I'll take responsibility for the gaffe this time, but I'll be watching so as not to take any undeserved blame in the future - blogger does occasionally misplace comments.
Nonetheless, my apologies to the late, great Bussunda.
